Calgary mum makes a big mistake

I'm sure you've heard the story by now about the Calgary mum who left two babies in a locked, unheated SUV? Yes, I've done something as stupid as that, but not as long, when paying for gas, and then waiting, and waiting in the lineup. You anxiously watch the car, tapping your foot. I think every Mum has had one or two incidents like this type of one per year. Most, thankfully, don't make the national news. But it's a good, cautionary tale. What if somebody broke into it and stole that vehicle? Yeah, the chances are slim but you never know.

It's damn hard to balance the load, at times, I know. You are tired yourself. The baby is sleeping. Let him rest you think. But, no, that's not safe. Listen to those little Mummy voices that whisper "Danger".

My own scariest incident was this. When Sarah was about 3, roughly, we'd done a walk around the block in the winter. I was pushing baby Victoria in her car seat/stroller combo. Just as we were finishing our walk I checked both ways and then walked across and up the driveway towards our door. Suddenly, behind me I heard the sound of wheels jamming, and sliding on snow. I whipped around. Sarah, who'd been glued to my side on the walk, was still in the middle of the road. A car had stopped, sideways, inches from her. Oh God, that was awful. A momentary lapse on my part, by not checking Sarah's location, and making sure she was beside me could have been tragic. So, see every Mum has these "God's gifts" as I call them. Little brushes that could be tragic but thankfully God saves the day.

I hope I don't offend anyone, but yes, obviously I do believe in a God, up there, somewhere. :)

Please, listen to those little voices that say "Be careful". It's up to us to protect these little ones.

My heart nearly leaped out of my throat when I read the story about Sarah. We had a similar incident where Aerik ran for the road at about three, in utter defiance. We were going and he didn't want to wait for us, so he dashed over the front lawn and into the road. Just then, our neighbour came around the corner in his car and stopped about a foot short of a now shocked Aerik.

Thankfully it was that neighbour and not one that likes to drive fast, whipping around the corner at top speed (we had several of those on that street). It's like a 'get out of jail free' card when a tragedy is averted like that.

Wow, that's a horrible story yourself! Yes, get out of jail free card indeed. For sure.
